Regarding your original created piece. The Mammals are excited about working with passionate individuals who consider themselves creative artists. We want to see what you like to create. This can be anything from a monologue you have written to design portfolio/ puppetry/ mask/ sculpture/ music /dance/ movement. We only ask that it be something you have worked on before arriving at the rehearsal. Feel free to share with us pieces you've created at improvisational workshops previously, but we prefer you not attempt to improvise an entirely new piece in front us.
Our upcoming productions
The Noir Triptych
Breed With Me - Opening December 2009
Aliens, Ghosts, Noir…Breed With Me continues The Mammals’ Noir Triptych, a hardboiled story of a man whose appetites have forced him to flee from his past into the American desert where he falls into the clutches of the ultimate femme fatale. Garnering a 'Highly Recommended' review in the Chicago Reader, the original 2003 production was described by Jack Helbig, "for 50 minutes I was alternately fascinated and terrified by the wonderfully perverse story of a seductive woman who may or may not be a killer."
The Meatlocker - Opening April 2010
The Third Play in the Noir Triptych, this is the tale of a boxer haunted by demons from his past warning that if he goes down for the full ten count, even if it's a dive, he wont ever get back up. Every time the boxer steps on the mat, he is fighting for his life. The real trouble occurs when the boxer meets a bookie who wont take no for an answer to fix a fight. This story will be told by the Mammals in both graphic novel form as well as a stage production.

4. Whereas there are lots of fantastic theatre companies in Chicago, nobody else is quite like the Chicago Mammals!
5. The Chicago theatre scene is incredibly diverse. There is something for just about everyone's taste. The foundation of that amazing menagerie of experience is the small storefront theatre scene in this town! Supporting a company like the Mammals not only helps us bring you more work... it helps the entire theatre community. It is amazing all the little ways in which all of us who see and do theatre in this town are connected! A butterfly gives a fifteen dollar donation to see a show in a non-traditional space and tornado of art and excitement is what we all profit!
If you seen the show, or any Mammals show - Thank You!
If you are going out to the theatre this weekend to see any of our fellow Chicago small storefront companies - Thank You!

Meet the Crew - Brian Seitel - DEVILS DON'T FORGET

Brian moved to Chicago in September 2009 after landing a job as a web developer with a company in the Loop. He graduated from Jacksonville State University (in Alabama, not Florida) twice with a B.A. in Drama and a M.S. Ed in Secondary Education. He taught for two years before deciding he wasn't cut out for it, and decided to focus on a less demanding day-job so that he could spend more energy on theatrical pursuits. He has performed in over 25 plays in Alabama and Georgia, but his true passion is directing.
"I'm honored for the opportunity to work with The Mammals, as well as with such a stellar cast and with the phenomenal director Bob Fisher. I hope to have some future directing projects lined up soon and look forward to extending my theatrical career in Chicago!"

For The Noir Enthusiast
"Fun performances populate this new Noir mystery playing at the RPB Rorschach Space just off the Irving Park brown line stop. DEVILS DON’T FORGET is produced by the group The Mammals, who are ambitiously producing a trilogy of Noir inspired works. DEVILS rides a line between natural and supernatural, noir and realism. The story follows Buster, a paranoid amnesiac who simply knows that he’s done something wrong, terribly wrong, and wants nothing more than to keep on forgetting. Populating his world are gangsters, tough bartenders, and femme fatales, all in keeping with the Noir sensibilities of the script."
review by S. Mikayla Brown
Thoughts on DEVILS DONT FORGET from Darren Callahan
Bob Fisher is the hands-down best director for genre in Chicago. More relevant, more resonant, more alive than any seen-it-before family drama, the kind that plays at the bigger theaters every five minutes, DEVILS DON'T FORGET is another well-fought triumph of fringe theatre. Like the work of Dario Argento or Stanley Kubrick, this is a Director's Play (caps intentional.) Fisher's stories are like looking straight into someone's head. It's his vision and it's like no one else's.
...Don Hall, for example, is a character actor of the highest regard. His "Udo" is a sketchy portrait of a dapper killer that gives the audience the same unpredictability as Frank in BLUE VELVET, or The Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT. Susan Myburgh provided the light-dark wish fulfillment of a hot ingénue that brings together believability, sex appeal, and chemistry. And, like conjoined twins, Adam Dodds and Anya Clingman work as one to create a high-concept villain, "The Father."
Usually on a limited budget, and clearly capable of handling more, DEVILS DON’T FORGET has an implied bigger scope and makes great use of music and lighting to never break the spell

Timeout Reviews DEVILS DON'T FORGET
Gripped by the desire to create live, lurid trash noir—a not entirely ignoble goal, given that an audience’s close proximity to simulated torture is the opposite of sense-numbing digital entertainment—the Mammals assume that an extended fantasy sequence of physical and psychological mutilation is enough to carry an evening. Surprisingly, they’re not far off. Fisher’s 75-minute ballet of fetishized violence, in which a mad-ish man hallucinates two kinky thugs committing unspeakable acts on him and women he knows, threatens its way into your comfort zone with uncommonly low-tech but high-impact menace.

Guest Review Posted at Don Hall's Website!
"retooling the rules of a tried and true genre for a stark, stripped down tale of urban menace where the terror lies in everything that isn’t said."
"There is plenty of cringe-inducing violence, sure, but what really gets under your skin is the theme of remembering to forget, the act of willingly hiding from the truth even if it means bringing great harm to others. As much as the audience sympathizes with Buster (his send-ups of pulpy noir voiceover are both hilarious and thought provoking), he’s still hiding from his moral obligations for the majority of the play."

Meet the Crew - DEVILS DONT FORGET - Jesus Contreras

Jesus Contreras, aka Chuy, wouldn't take no for an answer. Now he is essential to the Chicago Mammals and we love him dearly! DEVILS DONT FORGET couldn't have happened without his dilligence and hard work!
Chuy - "I do theatre because I love the process of putting a show up. I love the people in the theatre community. I love the art of trying to entertain people. I do it, because it makes me happy. I've only been doing it for about two years, but the possibilities, both of artistic and personal development that have opened up in that time, lead me to believe that I can't see myself not doing this."

Part 7 Meet the Cast of DEVILS DON'T FORGET - Adam Dodds and Anya Clingman

Adam Dodds

Anya Clingman
Adam Dodds is from Howard, Pennsylvania (if you check your road atlas it's right there in the centerfold...although some people would say the crack.). He spent some time telling ghost stories on the streets of New Orleans before coming to Chicago. Adam is a member of Halcyon Theatre where he'll be directing Fucking Parasites for the Alcyone Festival later this summer. Favorite Chicago roles include Wallace in Militant Language (Halcyon), Sir Kay in The People's Sword in the Stone, (Quest), and Moe in Infancy (Steep).
Anya Clingman has been creating theatre at a rate of about four shows a year since she was nine. She is an actor, writer, director, puppeteer, and sometime stage-manager. Past productions have included Kafka/Bullard’s The Trial, Dahl/Nolan’s James and the Giant Peach and The BFG, Mee/Murray’s Full Circle and NWaC’s own Episodical Trilogy. She has been doing original work at venues like Looptopia, The Subterarranean, Abbey’s Pub, The Empty Bottle, and The Inconvenience Threatre. She would like to thank the folks at The Right Brain Project, the Coletto-Kaplans and her enormously supportive loved ones for helping her get this far.

Meet the Cast of DEVILS DON'T FORGET - Don Hall

What can be said about Don Hall that hasn't already been uttered through clenched teeth!? Don Hall is the Events Coordinator for Chicago Public Radio and the Audience Services cat for NPR’s prolific game show "Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!"
Don is a producer, director, and writer of Chicago Off-Loop Theater and the Founding Director of Chicago's prolific WNEP Theater. Every now and again, Don can be seen performing on a Chicago stage or teaching advanced improvisational technique.
He is also an angry liberal and a dissatisfied artist.
Visit the blog - An Angry White Guy in Chicago (http://www.donhall.blogspot.com/) - for daily updates about his skewed view of Chicago theater, the fetid world of politics and the planet in general. It isn’t pretty, so enter at your own risk.
He also happens to be one of the most villainous bad guys the Chicago Storefront Scene has ever spawned. Don plays UDO the heavy in DEVILS DONT FORGET. Come on out and hiss at him!

Meet the Cast of DEVILS DON'T FORGET - Dennis Frymire

Dennis Frymire plays BUSTER in DEVILS DON'T FORGET
Dennis moved to Chicago back in 2006 to take funny classes at I.O. and Annoyance and the like. He only does the occasional two-person improv show now, but since moving to the Windy City, he's acted with Wildclaw Theater, LiveWire Chicago, WNEP, Hubris Productions, and has directed for Theatre Momentum. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Dennis is also studying clinical massage therapy at The Soma Institute, and will be a licensed therapist in early 2010. Dennis also has a website Carmi Neighborhood Watch.
If you think Dennis is a good looking guy, then you should definitely come see him in his underwear at DEVILS DON'T FORGET! (wink)

Load In for DEVILS DON'T FORGET begins
Lights, Sound, Set, costumes... they are all coming in during the next 2 weeks. I am already feeling the little sense of wanting to hold on to it before it is all over.
We've assembled a fantastic cast, and I hope to talk a little bit about them over the next 2 weeks leading to that first curtain.
It is my hope that all of you in the Chicago Storefront Community will consider coming out to see DEVILS DON'T FORGET. I think we've got something very special here... oh and it runs for 4 weeks only!
Please consider subscribing to our blog themammals.blogspot.com or joining as a fan at our facebook page (just goto facebook and type in "Chicago Mammals").
All the best

2 Prepared Contrasting Monologues,
Original Created Piece
Regarding your original created piece. The Mammals are excited about working with passionate individuals who consider themselves creative artists. We want to see what you like to create. This can be anything from a monologue you have written to design portfolio/ puppetry/ mask/ sculpture/ music /dance/ movement. We only ask that it be something you have worked on before arriving at the rehearsal. Feel free to share with us pieces you've created at improvisational workshops previously, but we prefer you not attempt to improvise an entirely new piece in front us.
Our 2009 season
Devils Don't Forget - April 2009
The Second Play in Bob Fisher's Noir Triptych
What would you do if you finally were able to forget all the sins of your past, but someone or something you can't quite identify is chasing you down trying to force you to remember? Devils Dont Forget takes all the genre elements of Noir and melds them with Lovecraftian villainy. Previously performed under the title "Save Me From Myself", the Chicago Reader said this play was "like Dario Argento putting flowers on the grave of Raymond Chandler."
Seven Snakes Workshop - Spring/Summer 2009
Described as Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome meets Romeo and Juliet, a story about a mysterious masked bandit who stumbles through a post apocalyptic desert into a abandoned veterans' hospital where the forsaken patients are certain he is their mortal enemy. The only remaining caretaker for the octogenarian military men is a girl raised at the hospital by her recently deceased mother, the last registered nurse assigned to this facility. The young girl must protect the mysterious masked man from the veterans' wrath, and in doing so falls in love. However, the old veterans aren't wholly wrong about the intent of this young enigmatic male. This workshop will be a collaborative approach to staging this Science Fiction Narrative over a number of weeks culminating in a private performance for friends and fellow artists.
The Meatlocker - Fall/Winter 2009
The Third Play in the Noir Triptych, this is the tale of a boxer haunted by demons from his past warning that if he goes down for the full ten count, even if it's a dive, he wont ever get back up. Every time the boxer steps on the mat, he is fighting for his life. The real trouble occurs when the boxer meets a bookie who wont take no for an answer to fix a fight. This story will be told by the Mammals in both graphic novel form as well as a stage production.
